History

The Cob Cottage

Your accomodation is is a recently renovated cob cottage that was built in the late 1800's.
The term "Cob" describes the method of construction. With little timber available at the time, local construction practices tended toward using readily-available materials. Cob is in fact clay, sand, earth, water and straw traditionally mixed by trampling. . This form of construction yielded thick, strong walls and resulting in an even temperature inside.
Other forms of construction popular at the time include stacked-stone. An extremely precise example of stacked schist construction is Mitchell's cottage. This is well worth a visit. Drive south to Fruitlands and up Simes road to the cottage.

Fruit

Fruit-growing has long been an important part of the district. Central Otago was well known for it's wonderful fruit, especially appricots, apples and cherries. More recently viticulture has displaced much of the original plantings, but cherries along with some newer varieties of fruit still remain popular.
